GENEVA (AP) — Grassroots political activists in Switzerland are planning to copy the Occupy Wall Street protests by staging a demonstration against their country's banks.
A call on the social networking site Facebook to occupy Zurich's Paradeplatz has generated hundreds of responses.
One of the organizers, Dominic Schriber, says up to 1,000 people are expected to come to the protest Saturday in what is considered the heart of Zurich's financial district.
Schriber told The Associated Press on Sunday that a planning meeting would be held in advance to seek "the lowest common denominator" among groups with disparate political leanings.
Switzerland's political parties have distanced themselves from the event.
The protest in Zurich is one of several being organized across Europe for Oct. 15.
